How can I get additional points for French in Express Entry?

In order to claim points for French-language proficiency through Express Entry, you have to take an approved language test for Canadian immigration. Currently, there are two French-language tests approved for this purpose: 

1) The Test d’Evaluation de Français (TEF Canada)

The test comprises four modules: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

The e-TEF is an online version where you can take the reading, writing, and listening modules on a computer at the designated test center.

  • Written comprehension (Reading): 60 minutes — 40 questions (300 points)
  • Written expression (Writing): 60 minutes — 2 topics (450 points)
  • Oral comprehension (Listening): 40 minutes — 40 questions (360 points)
  • Oral expression (Speaking): 15 minutes per candidate — 2 subjects (450 points)

2) The Test de connaissance du français pour le Canada (TCF Canada)

 

The test comprises 4 mandatory sections: listening, reading, speaking, and writing.

TCF Canada exam comprises 78 items that incorporate listening and reading comprehension. 

 

  • Listening comprehension — (39 items — 35 minutes) — All MCQs
  • Reading comprehension (39 items — 60 minutes) — All MCQs
  • Written expression (60 minutes — 3 Tasks)
  • Oral expression (12 minutes — 3 Tasks)

Points to earn for Canada PR by giving TEF or TCF

For French as a second language, you can get 4 points if you score CLB 5/6 in all 4 abilities (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). It can rise to 12 and 24 points if you get CLB 7/8 and CLB 9/10, respectively.

Besides 4 to 24 points, you can also earn up to 50 additional points (French as your second language) if you have CLB 7 in French. i.e. if you get CLB 7, you can earn 62 points
